Plant of the Month - January 2007

Wintersteed Witchhazel (Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Wintersteed’)

If you are looking to add some color and interest to the winter landscape, Witchhazel is a sure choice! The many varieties available provide for a wide array of color choices from yellow to orange to coppers and reds. Many selections provide subtle but effective fall color, and some are even fragrant!

Hamamelis is a large shrub, 10’-15’, sometimes larger, that is best utilized in a border, but can be worked in a entry space as a winter welcomer. Give this plant some sun, although it won’t like very dry soils. Limited pruning is needed while young, but can be gently shaped as the plant matures.

There are many species and varieties of Witchhazel. Hamamelis vernalis ‘purpurea’ is a winter flowering specimen with fragrance and good fall color. Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Jelena’ has orange flowers and orange fall color.
